Summary

Every type of key opens another set of doors. Every guard randomly carries one of the five keys with them. The key will always be carried by the same guard.

You can knock out guards to steal their keys. A Cup of Molten Chocolate can one-shot a Guard which can be useful to quickly take their stuff if you have low health.

Make a copy of that key away from a Wad of Putty and return the key back to guard's inventory. You can also place a key in an inmate' s desk. You can take it out and use after getting out of the solitary. If the guard wakes up and he doesn't have his key, you will be sent to solitary.

Other info

The doors with a blue lock can simply be passed wearing a guard outfit. The doors with a white lock can only be passed by tying up all of the guards.

If your escape method involves doors with blue locks, you can obtain a guard outfit in four ways. The most recommended one is to clip a guard and steal their clothing. Taking their baton is highly suggested after the method is proceeded because you won't get put in solitary if a guard is missing a weapon or outfit, and the guard's damage rate will drop drastically when they attack you after clipping them. Another way is through crafting one with Infirmary Overalls and a Jar of Ink. The third way is to simply buy one from an inmate. Remember that if the opinion of a prisoner is high, the prices will be lower. The fourth way is by just taking a clean guard outfit from the laundry job. If there is a contraband detector in the way of the exit, simply wear the guard outfit and walk through it. Then switch back to your inmate outfit.

Be sure to make note of which guards have which key. You can find out what number the guards have by writing down the guard order when naming your people or by simply giving the first 5 guards a specific name to recognize them. For example, the first guard on the naming screen is always with the cell key and so on. As seen in the list above.

Plastic Keys are contraband and they are made with a Key Mold and Molten Plastic.

Obtaining

Taking a key from a guard is a risk as you get put in Solitary if a guard is missing a key. Many people have discovered a way to glitch a key from a guard: wait until lights out or evening rollcall and find the guard with the key you want, knock them out and take them to your cell. Take their key and sleep before they wake up, the guard will leave when you have slept and saved and you will not be sent to Solitary. In the new version if you want a real key just use Cup of molten chocolate during Evening free period or Night roll, then use it to instantly KO on guard then put it in the cell and use Duct tape or rope to tie him up for whole time. You get the key if you want but make sure take it at night then go to sleep and your real keys are safe will not sent to Solitary. ( Still works in Xbox/PS4 versions but now it changes) you go to Solitary when you click on the ''save" button). Always take note on what guard has which key. Another way is luring the guard to your cell. Dig a hole and wake an inmate by interacting with them, they will call for a guard. Cover the hole up, as soon as the guard enters the cell, beat him, take the key and sleep. You will have no control over what guard comes(it doesn't work anymore ; you go to Solitary when you click on the ''save" button). Another way is to put all your countraband items in the desk of an other inmate (with the countraband items on the ground), plug the digged walls with the REAL wall (they will not be repaired if it's a real wall and it will stay nearly broken), then knock out your wanted guard and then quickly stash their key in someone else's desk, or a toilet, which is safer as toilets won't reset until your session ends. You will get sent to solitary and then the key and your items will still be there after. This method is easier but you do get sent to solitary, so you take four more days to escape.
